How the preset meets the rules

The portal does not state pixel dimensions, only that the picture must be square and between 10 KB and 1 MB, so the preset produces an 800 × 800 pixel JPEG, which gives a sharp face and typically a file of 60–200 KB. If your photo is very simple and falls under 10 KB, the tool pads it to reach the minimum without changing a pixel. The checklist reminds you of the points that cannot be verified by software: front view, open eyes, no spectacles, a plain light background and no shadows.

Common reasons for e-Visa photo rejections

  • Not square. The most frequent cause: a 4:3 phone photo. The locked frame in the tool makes a perfect square.
  • Glasses or glare. The rules say “without spectacles”.
  • Shadows. A shadow of your head on the wall, or half of the face in shade.
  • Borders or white margins around the picture, for example from a scanned print.
  • Head not centred or cut off, with the hair or chin outside the frame.
  • File size outside 10 KB to 1 MB, which the tool checks for you.

Preparing the passport page

The portal also asks for a scan of the passport’s bio page as a PDF between 10 KB and 300 KB. Photograph or scan the page flat in daylight, crop away the surroundings with the crop tool, and then use the Image to PDF tool with “Limit PDF size (KB)” set to 300 or a little less. Check that the text in the PDF is readable at 100%. If the PDF comes out under 10 KB, use a larger picture. The application rules can change, so check the portal on the day you apply.
