Frequently asked questions

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. Every tool runs locally in your browser with JavaScript and the Canvas API. Pictures are never sent to us and they are gone when you close or reload the page. The privacy policy explains what the page itself does load, such as ads.

How do I compress an image to an exact size like 50 KB?

Open the 50 KB compressor (or the general compressor for any target), add your picture and download the result. The tool tries different JPEG qualities and, if needed, slightly smaller pixel dimensions, then keeps the best version that fits under your limit.

Which image formats can I use?

JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF files can be opened, depending on your browser. You can export JPG, PNG or WebP, and combine pictures into a PDF. HEIC photos from an iPhone are best converted to JPG on the phone first, because most browsers cannot read them.

Can I make a passport photo with this site?

You can crop and size a photo to the common official dimensions, check the head position against a guide and build a printable sheet. We cannot guarantee that an authority will accept the result, and some countries — including the UK, the US and Canada — do not allow edited background colours. Read the country requirements guide first.

Why is my picture still larger than the limit?

Very large or very detailed pictures sometimes cannot reach a tiny target at their current pixel size. Reduce the dimensions first with the resize tool, then compress again. PNG screenshots usually shrink far more when exported as JPG or WebP.

Is PhotoSizeMaker free?

Yes. The site is supported by advertising, which keeps every tool free without registration.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. The tools run in current mobile browsers. Very large photos use a lot of memory, so on an older phone resize them first or use a computer.
