How to use the WebP to JPG Converter

  1. Drop one or more WebP images on the box, or click it to choose files.
  2. Adjust the Quality if you like. The default of 92 suits most pictures.
  3. If the image has transparent areas, choose the colour that replaces them. White is the default.
  4. Download the JPG files one by one, or all together as a ZIP.

Why you end up with WebP files

WebP is an image format created by Google for faster web pages, and a large part of the web now serves pictures in it. When you right-click a picture and choose “Save image as”, the file you get is often a .webp, even though the page looked like an ordinary photo. The format is excellent for browsers but less welcome elsewhere, so the picture that opened perfectly in the browser is refused when you try to attach it to something.

Where WebP still causes trouble

Browsers display WebP everywhere, but other software lags behind: many upload forms, job and government portals, older versions of photo editors and office programs, print kiosks, and some e-mail and messaging workflows still insist on JPG or PNG. A JPG opens anywhere, so converting is the quickest fix. If the picture has transparency that you need to keep, convert to PNG instead.

Transparency, animation and quality

  • Transparency. JPG cannot be transparent, so transparent pixels are blended with your chosen background colour.
  • Animation. Animated WebP files are converted to a single still picture, the first frame.
  • Quality. WebP and JPG are both lossy in most cases, so a conversion adds a second round of compression. At quality 92 or higher the extra loss is not visible; use WebP to PNG for none.
  • Size. The JPG is usually somewhat larger than the WebP it came from, as WebP is the more efficient format. If a limit applies, use a size-target tool.

Tips for saving WebP pictures

If you save a lot of pictures from websites, you can often avoid WebP by opening the image in its own tab first and checking its address: some sites accept a different file extension. When that does not work, it is quicker to convert a batch in one go than to fix them one by one. Drop all the files at once, wait for the rows to turn green and download the ZIP.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open a WebP file?

Any modern browser opens it: drag the file into a Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari window. To use it in software that does not support WebP, convert it to JPG or PNG here.

Is WebP to JPG lossless?

No, JPG is a lossy format. The change is invisible at quality 92 or higher. For a lossless conversion choose PNG.

What happens to animated WebP files?

Only the first frame is converted to a still JPG.

Can I convert a lot of files at once?

Yes. Drop the whole batch and download a ZIP.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The conversion is done by your browser, and nothing is sent to a server.
